Balancing talent and profession is an herculean task that has made most young people to drop either to talent to pursue profession or to drop profession to pursue talent. Their academic qualifications aside, here are Kenyan entertainers who have made a name for themselves through talent and not profession;
Nameless; He is not only a musical guru but also a proficient architect no wonder he has ‘structured’ his music journey for more than a decade. Born David Mathenge he attended Strathmore school before proceeding to The University of Nairobi where he graduated with a degree in Architecture. Considered one of modern urban music pioneers in the country an honor that earned him a spot in the list of 100 most influential Kenyans published by The standard newspaper in 2007. A role model to many thanks to balancing talent and profession. The father of two has worked on many projects as an architect the latest one being The Hub mall in Karen. The commercial complex is the third largest shopping mall after Garden city, Thika road and Two Rivers,Ruaka.
Polycarp Otieno; Boy band group Sauti Sol guitarist popularly known as ‘fancy fingers’ who doubles up as aa producer graduated from Jomo Kenyatta university of Agriculture and Technology with a degree in Actuarial science.A skillful guitarist who has been an active member of Sauti Sol since its inception in 2006. He helped in production of their two albums Mwanzo (2008) and Sol Filosofia (2011). He has also produced music for other popular artists including Suzanne Owiyo and Della.
Frasha; born Francis Amisi in Athi river. He went to Machakos boys high school before proceeding to Medical training college (KMTC) where he graduated with a diploma in physiotherapy. Frasha was a practicing physiotherapist at Aga Khan hospital where he specialized in pain management until 2011 when he quit to fully concentrate on his music career. He commonly hints to his other profession in his songs with a common line “Dakitare” which means doctor. Frasha says he has absolutely no regrets for quitting his medical career as his musical career has been successful and that’s what he really likes to do. The is a father of three unsuccessfully ran for the Athi River Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in the 2017 general elections which he ‘opted out’ a few days to the actual election day. He currently works for the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in Machakos County government specifically at Machawood which is the Machakos Entertainment Centre for Film, Media, Music and the Arts.
King Kaka; Kennedy Tarriq Ombima is a Kenyan Hip Hop artist, producer, video director and song writer. He went to St John’s primary school before proceeding to Eastleigh high school. Besides being a successful artist and an accomplished entrepreneur, king kaka is also an accountant. The rapper studied accounting at Kenya college of accountancy (KCA). Away from that he recently landed himself a new job as a lecturer at Zetech university,where he lectures students on brand development and entrepreneurship.
As a businessman King kaka has launched many projects on TV most recently his Kaka Empire Majik water. He also runs Kaka Empire record label and cloth line. He is a proud father of two.He has surely give a proper ‘account’ of himself.
Elani; Elani is a three-person Kenyan musical band made up of talented musical geniuses. The band comprises of three members two of whom are lawyers and an Actuarial scientist.
Maureen- The mellow-voiced singer is a graduate of The University of Nairobi with a degree in law.
Bryan; The only male member of the group holds a law degree from The University of Nairobi. He says his first love was music and it took his parents persuasion to further studies.
Wambui Ngugi; She describes her entry to music as a “beautiful mistake”. The singer holds a BSc in Acturial science from the university of Nairobi.Together, the three band-mates have released an album “Barua ya Dunia” and have won numerous awards including Best African Pop in All Africa Music Award (AFRIMMA) 2014.
Kenrazy; born Kenneth Aketch Barnabas Oluoch he joined Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology after completing his secondary school education at St Mary’s Yala, to pursue computer engineering. He however doesn’t practice his profession as he put academics commitments on hold to concentrate on his music career. The Tichi hit maker built a movement called GHIPUKA which is coined to mean “THE ART OF DIVERSITY”.
DJ creme; born George Njuguna he graduated with a degree in computer science from Kabarak University .However, he abandoned his prestigious course to follow his dreams. He is one of the many Kenyan deejays that have remained relevant over the years. Today he is one of the highest paid DJs in Kenya.
Madtraxx; Born George Muigai music has been part of him since from his childhood days.His first scratch attempt as a deejay in 1998 was in Canada when he visited his elder brother, DJ Stylez . While at St Andrews Primary School he used to deejay using mad party tracks at the funky. This went on all the way to St Andrews High and United States International University-Africa where he studied a degree in Hotel Management. The moment he completed campus he decided to pursue music. He has managed to stay afloat for more than a decade disparaging pundits arguements that he was riding on the fame of his celebrated deejay brother. A founding member of the Kansoul musical group that brings together Kid Kora and Mejja since 2014.The versatile group has dropped club bangers. Having featured on Coke Studio Season 4 featuring Lizha James from Mozambique and nominated for MAMA’s 2016 listeners’ choice award which they unfortunately lost to South Africa’s Jay Prazah.
Wahu; Rosemary Wahu Kagwi is a Kenyan singer-songwriter, actress, entrepreneur and a former fashion model. She graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of arts (Mathematics and Communication) degree. She had earlier wanted to join a hair dressing school after high school but her parents would hear none of it.
The celebrated artist is married to fellow musician Nameless and together they have two daughters, Tumiso and Nyakio. In 2008 Wahu won the Africa Music Award 2008 best female artist category, MTV. She is known for her hit songs Sitishiki,liar and sweet love. She has juggled parenting and music pretty well.
