Now that children have gone back to school we can now talk as adults concerning the societal moral decay that stems from the top most echelons of our society. According to psychologist Albert Bandura a David Starr Jordan Professor Emeritus of Social Science in Psychology at Stanford University in his social learning theory children learn from their environment which largely comprise of people around them and the things they associate themselves with.
Why are parents acting surprised yet in a year they never spend a day educating their children about sexuality ,morality, honesty and faithfulness as virtues .As a matter of fact our parents are very busy looking for money left right and centre delegating their parental roles to teachers and pastors who are also assuming parents are doing their due diligence. Sexuality is the least discussed topics usually spoken in hush tones yet sex education ought to start on the dining table during school holidays. This explains the high rate of new HIV/AIDS infections and early pregnancies amongst adolescents.
In present day Kenya adolescents have found something they could use to earn reputable fame and admiration amongst their peers. After uncle Matiang’i banned holiday tuition, he gave them leeway and a lot of free time to engage in all sorts of sundries courtesy of idleness. So like all idle minds which turn out to be the devils workshop as the holy book says in Proverbs 16:27 they sought redemption in those uncensored photo shoots.
As absurd as it looked those of us who have been keen for sometime weren’t caught by surprise as these activities happen regularly along streets, recreational parks, house parties and those back to school gigs. The young adults shocked the nation with their flicking amorous and raunchy pictures that almost depicted nudity. The pictures slated for social media outlets are uploaded at the ignorance of their parents and top society icons or personalities. Since we are a selfish society, every man for himself and god for us all nobody cared to question the pro photographers who banked the cash for the shoot.
What did we do instead, we all ran to social media with the #IFIKIEWAZAZI hashtag as we sought to express our dissatisfaction and raise awareness.A hashtag that brought into sharp focus the holiday rendezvous as parents were to be made aware of what their products were busy doing under their noses across all social media platforms.
Pictures showcasing rachetness of adolescent girls ass grabbed by their tenage counterparts, others with girls amorously dropping of their pants to remain in bikinis. Some photographers go to grappling extents of capturing the boys and their girls simulating, not knowing they are promoting public possibility indecency. Such acts and sundries particularly baffled the nation agitating a stir up across social media platforms from Twitter, whatsapp and Telegram groups to Facebook.
Talking of whether the trendy hashtag was the correct measure to tackle the menace or not technically doesn’t matter . Something needs to be done. Drastic measures to mitigate such occurrences in future or else we will have a lost generation since our religious leaders are busy preaching about prosperity gospel, parents are too busy for children, society too individualistic to uphold societal values and teachers too demoralized to act accordingly due to meagre salaries and poor working conditions.
Mr. Ezekiel Mutua, who signs off as Kenya Film Classification C.E.O , the self proclaimed “moral police” opines that the society and media are to blame for deteriorating morals amongst the youth.” IFIKIEWAZAZI epitomizes the culture of debauchery and deviance among young people. It’s project x in disguise. Our youth are defying authority – God, parents and government. At the heart of this deviance is a disturbed voice of the youth who have lost sense of direction because we adults have failed them.” He said.
” The parents have failed them. The media has failed them. The leadership has failed them Religion has failed them. We must begin to have an honest conversation about the breakdown of the moral fabric,” he added in Facebook post.”We have put priority on the physical infrastructure and neglected the moral infrastructure. We have built the hardware but the software is faulty and must be fixed first. ” Reiterated the obviously enraged Ezekiel Mutua.
In a society where socialites are idolized, slay queen mentality is seen as empowerment, fathers are proud of their mpango wa kando’s, clubs sell alcoholic drinks to the underage, media promotes sponsor mentality as we cheer role models like Timmy T dat who undresses a lady on stage during a live performance with the lady enjoying every moment of fame. Dear parents we are not a society of saints,we are your reflection.
